As one of the four greatest ancient civilizations, China has a recorded history of about 4 thousand years. Feudalism and small-scale peasant economy and feudal thoughts have been existed in China since Qin dynasty, in 221 ., when many civilians did not have democratic rights and mainly lived on agriculture. Nearly at the beginning of Qing dynasty, the government began to carry out the close-door policy, stopping people’s interaction with foreign countries (Cao 48). As a result, when western countries built up democracy and quickly developed their industries and liberated their minds, China did not have an opportunity to develop with them so that it began to wane. For entering Chinese market and getting more raw materials from China, Britain launched the Opium War and forced open the door of China with its warships and cannons. After that, other Western powers such as France, Russia, Japan, Germany and the United States also invaded China essively (Cao 56), which caused a series of transformations of political system and economy and ideology in China. Although Chinese people suffered a lot under western countries’ invasions, they proceeded to learn from western countries to develop themselves and gradually eeded. So from a long view, western countries’ invasions in modern times have partly helped promote the development of Chinese society.
First of all, western countries’ invasions deepened Chinese people’s resentment of the autocratic monarchy and gave some references about democracy to those patriots who wanted to explore a better kind of political system. In 1840s and 1890s, Qing dynasty stupidly repressed Chinese people’s struggle against foreign invaders, which finally caused the defeat of the war. It even secretly signed unequal treaties
